Grant Writer (20-30 hrs/month)
Position Summary
Lightmaker Grants & Strategy is seeking subcontractors to assist with grant writing and research. Pay for the position starts at $45/hour for up to 20-30 hours per month, with room to grow. This is a 1099 position. Successful candidates must have strong writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to follow our structured processes. Candidates must also be highly detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and open to feedback. Experience with grant writing or nonprofits is helpful but not required. Subcontractors must be available for weekly 30-minute meetings on either Mondays or Tuesdays (time TBD). Local hires may occasionally participate in in-person meetups. Lightmaker Grants & Strategy is hiring reliable, detail-oriented grant writing subcontractors to help us serve mission-driven nonprofit clients across the country. We’re a fast-growing, fully remote team based in Little Rock, Arkansas, that has raised over $3.5 million for our clients since 2024. We specialize in grant writing and fundraising strategy for education, youth, and workforce development organizations.
Job Description
We are seeking grant writers who are organized, coachable, and committed to excellence in written and verbal communication. This position requires availability approximately 5-8 hours per week, including weekly team meetings. Responsibilities may include:
Writing grant proposals, grant reports, and letters of inquiry
Checking email/Slack every weekday, responding to team messages within 24 hours, and responding to client emails within 48 hours
Attending weekly 30-minute team meetings on Mondays or Tuesdays (time TBD)
Creating/editing required documentation for grant proposals
Reviewing and providing feedback on grant proposals and reports
Researching grant opportunities using Instrumentl, 990s, and other sources
Updating monthly progress reports/dashboards for clients
Coordinating with clients via phone, email, or Zoom, as needed
Assisting clients with submitting grants, as needed
Tracking time and submitting hours every month
Work Expectations
This is a position with a flexible schedule, outside of standing weekly meetings and daily check-ins on Slack/email, with firm deadlines for work turnaround times.
Grant writers must have a strong internet connection and a quiet place to take calls with your camera on during team and client meetings.
This is a 1099 contracted position, starting at $45/hour. There is a 90-day chemistry period.
Candidate Requirements & Preferences
Candidates must have strong writing and editing skills and the ability to follow our grant writing processes. We will provide training and access to professional development. Grant writers must be able to meet internal and external deadlines consistently. You must be available for weekly team meetings and respond to team communications within 24 hours.
We prefer at least 80% of these skills from our candidates:
Have a strong professional background in writing
Have the ability to consistently meet deadlines and turnaround times
Familiarity with Google Workspace, Zoom, Toggl, and Slack
Previous grant writing experience is a plus but not required
Have a willingness to learn and continually improve
Have strong analytical skills
Enjoy doing research and paying attention to details
Have knowledge of the nonprofit sector
Love helping organizations achieve their mission to make the world a better place
Be comfortable with learning new technologies

1) Write a 2-page LOI based on a previous grant application, and/or
2) Provide feedback on a short grant proposal.
If you're invited to participate in a test project, you will be paid $150 for completing it, regardless of whether we choose to hire you or not.
